Abstract
The study was conducted to establish the effect of some herbal mixtures: jedi, gbewutu and opa-eyin on the health status of Clarias gariepinus juveniles (49.20±1.59 g). Eight hundred (800) catfish was fed on 5ml, 10ml, 15ml and 20ml of each herb for 40 days. There was significant decrease in body weight gain with increase in concentrations of the herbs across all the treatments (p<0.05). Treatments with Jedi recorded 38.43±1.59, 35.00±0.26, 34.23±1.04, 33.00±0.10; those with Gbewutu recorded 40.23±0.61, 36.57±1.60, 34.60±1.20, 31.73±1.19; while Opa-eyin recorded 26.73±1.04, 25.77±1.48, 21.63±1.00, 20.33±0.70. There was a progressive increase in the white blood cells (WBC) and packed cell volume (PVC) while other parameters recorded no significant difference (p>0.05) across all the treatments. WBC increased in all groups of the three herbs indicating a defense mechanism against the severe pathological changes induced from the control diet to all the test diets with jedi, Gbewutu and Opa eyin extract inclusions. Opa-eyin showed a safe dosage range between 10ml and 15ml of inclusion level. The experiment showed that these herbal concoctions possess some immune-stimulating ability with toxic effects which make them unpalatable. Excessive consumption of these herbal products could cause a reparative damage to vital organs of the body. However, proper dosage recommendation is advised.
