The Presence of the Guppy Poecilia reticulata Peters, 1859 (Cyprinodontiformes: Poeciliidae) in the Fresh Waters of Belitung Island, Indonesia
This study reports the presence of the guppy (Poecilia reticulata, Peters, 1859) for the first time in the freshwater habitats of Belitung Island, Indonesia. Seven specimens of guppies were recorded in an irrigation canal in Tanjung Pandan City, Belitung Island, Indonesia. The species is classified as non-native in Indonesia and has probably been released into the spring by local people and successfully established itself in the water body. The introduction of non-native species into new habitats poses a serious threat to native populations. Several countries report adverse ecological impacts after the introduction of P. reticulata. Recording and monitoring of non-native fishes in natural habitats is highly recommended to understand their impact on native species.
